Long description

AtoANI BioPack is a social enterprise that seeks to address the plastic waste problem sustainably by making use of agricultural waste such as sugarcane bagasse, corn husks and rice straws to produce biodegradable packaging. The solution has already created a prototype of its biodegradable packaging and is looking to scale-up. It is currently under the Incubation Program of Makesense Academy supported by WWF Philippines and xChange following its participation in the 2020 Plastic SmartCities Innovation Competition. AtoANI BioPack’s solution involves the production of naturally-biodegradable packaging products as an alternative to plastic using agricultural wastes such as sugarcane bagasse (6.4 million tons/year wasted), corn husks (1 million ton/year wasted) and rice straws (1 million ton/year wasted) which are abundant in the Philippines as raw materials. This solution would allow for reduction of use of plastics, reduction in the agricultural waste as they are converted to packaging products as well as reduce reliance on wood pulp as raw material for paper packaging production which would not be sustainable in the future. Overall, the solution would create a system change in how we create biodegradable packaging products using sustainable materials from nature which would allow for collaboration of agro-industrial organizations, pulp and paper industry organization, packaging manufacturers and corporate customers from the consumer goods industry to work together to help save our planet.
