BikeFlip is where circularity and MaaS intertwine, offering a subscription on a refurbished (children's) bike!
Long description
Children grow, bikes do not. It is estimated that children outgrow their bikes in approximately 1.5 years. In combination with the ongoing repairs of children’s bicycles (flat tires for example), the search, purchase, and maintenance of the bicycles prove to be quite a hassle for the conscious urban parent.
Furthermore, The Netherlands has a huge problem concerning abandoned bikes, a vast amount (more than 250,000 yearly) of these forgotten bicycles end up on the municipality bike depot, which is a fancy name for the bike graveyard. Maintaining these depots is very costly for the municipalities, while the bicycles that end up there are often still good for a second life. On top of that, it is estimated (research by the ANWB) that 3,8 million bicycles stand idle and unused in sheds in the Netherlands. This results in a huge unused ‘waste-stream’.
BikeFlip offers a circular solution by upcycling these bikes back into society. Once upcycled we offer the bikes as a Mobility-as-a-Service subscription (including on-demand exchange and repair service) to prevent them from ending up in the municipality bicycle depot once again, thereby closing the loop! In this way, a new life is offered to forgotten second-hand (children’s) bicycles from the bicycle depot, children are satisfied with a beautiful, refurbished, and suitable bicycle, parents are relieved of the hassle and BikeFlip contributes to a sustainable and circular (bicycle) economy. That’s four birds with one stone!
