Long description

From water hyacinth menace to food

We do value addition to water hyacinth turning it to a high protein that is used to fortify livestock feeds. In addition, the by process products are processed into biofertilizers used as organic soil enrichment and plant nutrition. Water hyacinth is an invasive plant of freshwater lakes, in Kenya, it has claimed almost three-quarters of the space of Lake Victoria water surface denying communities of livelihood. Water hyacinth reduces dissolved oxygen into the lake hence aquatic deaths, it reduces transport and fishing activities as it covers landing zones and transport channels, it contaminates the water making it unsafe for human use and also it harbours most dangerous insects such as mosquitoes that cause malaria as well as venom snakes, crocodiles and hippos claiming lives of riparian communities.

At Biofit we harvest water hyacinth, process it into quality products that are sold to smallholder farmers, medium and large scale farmers in Kenya. These products have been tested and found safe for use, organic and affordable to farmers. With our technology, we are able to reduce the negative effect of water hyacinth on the Lake surface as well as sustainably solve farmers challenges of the high cost of livestock feeds and fertilizers.
