Molding "hard" plastics into usable products and material for local Kenyan communities with no access to electricity using a Biogas Compressor.
Long description
Despite the Kenyan government’s ban on single-use plastic, the country is littered with plastic, ruining the beautiful natural environment and harming wildlife. No solution or recycling options were provided for waste plastic. On average each Kenyan produces 0.03 kilos of plastic waste a day (Ritchie and Roser).
While globally there aren’t many industrial plastic recycling systems there are even fewer small-scale recycling systems, rarely in rural areas. Industrial systems are expensive to buy, set up, and run. Due to this and the lack of supporting infrastructure, there exists a design opportunity to manufacture low-cost off-grid plastic recycling machines.
The biogas compressor is designed and built for use in a rural environment with little or no electricity that effectively recycles plastic waste into sustainable products. People living in one of the many coastal towns in Kenya would be able to collect discarded beach plastic use the biogas compressor machine to create bricks for building houses, tiles for the floor, or other products.
