Eliminate baggage, reduce CO2 emissions, liberate travel.
Long description
Who hasn’t dreamt of travelling light, of taking less? The pleasure and simplicity of moving nimbly through the world’s airports with only a modest valise would appear a utopian dream to most travellers.
My project proposes a leaner and more sustainable approach to the issue of travel – and specifically baggage, consumption, waste and ownership. It imagines reframing personal values around a more thoughtful and economic use of resources, resulting directly in personal, commercial and environmental benefits.
Aviation is responsible for 2% of the world’s carbon emissions. In 2019 there were 38.3 million flight departures worldwide carrying 4.5 billion passengers. A round-trip flight from Mumbai to London Heathrow, for example, generates 640kg of carbon emissions, the equivalent of 273 litres of petrol. Not surprisingly, the more luggage you take on the plane the more fuel you need to burn to keep it in the air.
Brease* imagines renting the items needed for your trip at the point of destination, ordered online, in advance and supplied by locally sourced stores and boutiques. These would be waiting for you to pick up from an airport concession after de-boarding or delivered to your accommodation, awaiting your arrival.
Such a service could cater to individuals, families or business travellers and would simultaneously promote local stores and designers’ wares while stimulating that community’s economy. At the end of your trip items are dropped off or picked up and laundered for re-use.
You travel lighter, your aircraft burns less fuel, the planet sighs in relief.
