Innovating keyboards for efficient B-2-B maintenance at scale to extend product lifecycle in use within a circular business model.

Long description

Keyboards are a necessary tool required for human-to-tech communication. Non-personal keyboards found in shared use are sometimes neglected and abused, resulting in shortened lifespans to 1-2 years. Keyboards can have up to 3x more bacteria than a public toilet seat and can be found to be soiled with debris which may cause faults in the switch mechanisms of keys. Cleaning keyboards can be an inefficient use of time and can risk breaking the keys if unfamiliar with keycap mechanisms used in some keyboards.

This circular B2B keyboard is designed to offer a simple and efficient solution to cleaning keyboards in the shared environment through an additional netting layer between the keycaps and the switch cover. This netting will capture most debris during use, but far more importantly allows the keycaps to be pulled off the board while remaining interconnected. The keyboard will use mechanical switches, paired with studded keycaps connecting to the net, for longevity. Shared-use keyboards, predominantly accepted in darker colours, are a good product for mixed plastic recycle to be resourced where currently mixed plastics are not regularly remanufactured into products but incinerated due to colour inconsistencies. Further material choices include ABS keycaps, nylon net, and aluminium switch plate as these materials are all readily recycled to supply a resource stream for this product, and for recycling at the end of use for circularity. These keyboards are not owned by the user but leased through a B2B lease & service model, maintaining ownership and responsibility to the supplier.
