Collect coffee grounds and deliver it back as bio-based coffee cups (and other products) to replace disposable cups and traditional plastics.
Long description
For some time now, there have been bio-plastics on the market that can be made from renewable raw materials instead of petroleum. At best, these plastics behave just like petrochemical plastics, but unfortunately at a significantly higher price. Partly because of this, these plastics are not common yet in regular applications and products. The 18 billion cups of coffee drunk annually in the Netherlands lead to about 300 million kilos of coffee grounds. These coffee grounds are now usually considered unusable and thus end up as waste in the waste incineration. However, if the coffee grounds are properly treated, they can serve as a raw material. Interestingly, for many people coffee is a symbol of warmth, cosiness and quality. There is a great opportunity in the combination of these two aspects. By producing Coffee Based bio-plastics, a worthy replacement of petrochemical plastic is created with a clear added value due to the positive coffee association. Coffee Based makes sheet material that can replace plastic (coffee)machine parts and furniture veneers and makes injection molded products such as coffee cups that can replace disposable cups. To close the chain, Coffee Based has developed the Coffee Recycle Service (CRS) together with coffee supplier MAAS and waste processor SUEZ. In exchange for a CRS-fee, we collect the coffee grounds separately. We process it into products that are returned to the companies where the coffee grounds are collected, financed by 50% of the CRS-fee as store credit.
