Long description

The goal is to avoid plastic waste caused by disposable cups and India finds a solution among its treasure of heritage.

The traditional teacup made of clay and called Bhar, turns into an innovation and sustainable alternative. But, challenges appear along the entire life cycle. Therefore, it is important to mind the cup’s sustainability standards and to celebrate its advantages.

Collection Bhar recycles the material of discarded Bhars which is used by international ceramic designers to create a collection of tea products. The designed items bring out the versatile character of the clay cup and represent the diversity of different shapes and types of clays in India.

The driving idea is to prevent plastic waste that is disposed of in the environment. Railway Minister Piyush Goyal is using Bhar to replace plastic cups on trains and stations. This high quantity of terracotta causes soil pollution, negatively impacts the agricultural land, and destroys the natural surroundings of trees. The policy’s intention is, according to the understanding of holistic sustainability, the opposite of a circular economy and the efficient use of raw materials.

Bhar is recognised for its responsible behaviour towards nature and for its valuable product culture. Using the full potential of Bhar makes it a global
