Compost Express collects foodwaste from businesses and consumers, composts it and re-supplys it to farms across the country at an affordable price.

Long description

In 2018, the Kampala Capital City Authority was collecting approximately 493,209 tons of waste per day of which 95% of it was organic waste. In 2018, Kampala’s population was 2,986,000 and this increased in 2020 to 3,470,000 people which meant an increase in waste.

Food waste is a huge problem in Kampala today and with the increase in middle class citizens, this problem has worsened. What’s really ironic about this problem is that it can be managed and intergrated into a circular flow where instead of it being wasted, the foodwaste is taken back to the farms where the food is grown but as compost.

To solve this problem, we are proposing Compost Express, a project that will work hand-in-hand with local and private garbage collectors to collect foodwaste from businesses and consumers after which that waste will then be taken to one of our compost centres, turned into compost and then supplied to farms at an affordable price.

Furthermore, through the Compost Express website and later on mobile application, whoever gives their waste to Compost Express will have the opportunity to track their waste and know which farms it has benefited through the compost supplied.

We believe that through this user centered project we will not only be repurposing food waste to turn it into compost but we will be redesigning it in-line with circularity models where it goes back to it’s source which is the soil.
