El compostaje colaborativo como estrategia de impacto socioambiental en contexto urbano.

Long description

The project begins at the end of 2016 as part of an initiative developed by 8 residents of the La Piedad building, in the Doctores neighborhood of Mexico City.

At the beginning, the idea was focused on experimenting with the composting method as a strategy to achieve a responsible and profitable management of the building’s organic waste, however the results significantly exceeded our expectations by generating various impacts on a socio-environmental level. The neighborhood composting system, installed on the roof of the building, is composed of 3 geotextile containers donated by Greentools, it fulfilled our initial purpose efficiently, effectively and effectively. It allows to process 100 kg of organic waste monthly and produce 30 kg of compost, which is distributed among the neighbors. Operation and maintenance are carried out in shifts between neighbors and only requires the participation of 2 or 3 neighbors for 2 hours each month. The proposal, in addition to reducing the amount of waste generated in the building by taking advantage of half the organic waste, allowed us to create a sense of community, promoting coexistence and environmental culture among neighbors. Over the years, the rooftop space benefited from the fact that the project led to its greening and beautification. From this experience, the scara.b project was born, which promotes the culture of urban composting by giving workshops and seeking to replicate the neighborhood composting model as a socio-environmental impact strategy that encourages social participation in the conscious and profitable management of organic waste.
