The Eco-Rangers for a green eco example of sustainable waste management.
Long description
The Eco-rangers project aims to address the issue of illegal waste disposal in Gili Trawangan, Indonesia. Our approach focuses on environmental education and local empowerment to change disposal patterns and environmentally damaging behaviour. Existing punitive measure that imposes sanctions and fines on members of the community have been proven time and time again to be poor motivators of change this issue. The key activities carried out by an Eco-ranger would include:
♣ Waste collection services (island-wide)
♣ Education programs (door-door, Trash app)
♣ Enquiry response (households and businesses)
Our approach aims to build on the Gili Eco Trust’s existing relationship and support from the community, to create a unified sense of purpose to preserve the islands future. Through local research and surveys, our organisation has demonstrated a clear alignment with the interests of locals, presenting a strong vessel for change to be realised with this project. With this increasingly passionate culture of environmentalism on Gili Trawangan, we anticipate associated increase in employment opportunities to locals through the program. On an island with a tourism dependent economy, a locally driven industry that carries out business that exists to serve the community is a powerful prospect.
Everyone needs to be equally responsible of how much waste they produce daily and the awareness they need to have of becoming fully involved in their island’s greener future. The Eco-Rangers will provide valuable input in the design of a mobile Trash App to help people managing their waste as well as changing consumer habits.
