App to redesign, repair, and transform clothing alongside with local experts in tailoring and fashion in Mexico City.
Long description
Mexico City, the fifth most populated city, is known as one of the design capitals of the world. Yet it has not used design as a means to diminish textile waste production. In 2020 it was reported that only 0.5% of what a person’s closet was disposed, was actually recycled. Let’s remember that the population in Mexico is of 9, 209, 944 millions up to 2019.
One of the most symbolic Mexican handicraft is embroidery and it has been evolving to nowadays fashion. With Elysiam we aim to empower this industry so that local designers, tailors, and dressmakers become change agents. How? By sharing their knowledge with individuals interested in repairing, redesigning, or transforming their clothing. With this, we are also spreading the word through digital or physical environments by organizing galas and showing the creative and sustainable results.
Clothing tells more of us than what we sometimes want, let’s keep it a longer time with us. It has so much to say…still. Today Mexicans buy at least four times every six months and only use 20% of their closet. With Elysiam we look forward to make the best use of textiles and give our environment a break by using fast fashion in a smarter way.
