ENDELEVU encourages recovery and reuse of construction materials in Kenya through a digital material sharing platform and demonstration projects.
Long description
ENDELEVU is a virtual construction material marketplace which promotes material reuse in construction by providing information on the locations and quantities of available reclaimed materials, examples of current and past case study projects, technical guidelines and regulations governing use of reclaimed construction materials.
Millions of tons of reusable material such as straw, home furnishings and construction and demolition debris, are produced each year in Kenya. Unfortunately, most of these materials are land-filled or incinerated.
Whilst there is some considerable landfill diversion rate for some materials, most of the building components are recycled or downcycled, which in turn, reduces their value. If we can Reuse materials from existing buildings and construction sites we’ll keep these circulating at their highest value and prevent the need to source new manufactured materials. The barriers to re-using construction materials include lack of knowledge, inconsistent supplies and concerns on quality. ENDELEVU is addressing these systemic barriers to put Reuse into mainstream practice.
ENDELEVU provides potential consumers of reclaimed materials an online location-based information web map (mobile and web app) that includes reclaimed material sources, planned projects that need reclaimed materials, and information on regulations governing use of reclaimed construction materials as well as case studies of past projects that employed recycled material in the design and construction. The App includes the following information about reusable material: type(s) of material, availability, producer throughput, cost, and material characteristics.
The materials donated on ENDELEVU are used in constructing healthier school and healthcare infrastructure in constrained settings.
