Cardboard "waste" as means of growing curious minds.
Long description
The project explores how the amount of cardboard waste can be reduced by changing peoples’ views and behavior, showing them opportunities where they might not be so obvious, in hopes to help the environment but also people themselves, as I believe that a curious mind is a free mind. In this particular case, I focused on creating a specific object for children to explore their imagination with. By using a simple blueprint, cardboard, pencils, glue, a cutter, and a cutting board, they, together with their parents, can create modular, constructional objects for uninstructed and free play. 2 or more of these can be connected using pencils. Depending on the positioning/orientation, it is possible to achieve fixed connections as well as joints that allow more or less complex rotations. A shape is created out of a single rectangular piece of cardboard, folded in itself to achieve maximum sturdiness as well as a tighter grip on the pencil. The folded cardboard is then sealed with an adhesive, however, other items can be used instead, such as double-sided tape, elastic bands, shoelaces and so forth. Holes are made by simultaneously pushing and rotating the pencil through. FIO is inclusive, free, and open-ended, meaning there is much potential for expansion and branching out into other directions as well. How can it work? Various workshops in kindergartens, schools, communities; municipality campaigns (billboards, e-mails…); companies like IKEA including blueprints inside their shipments (allowing customers to choose of course) + achieving a global reach with minimum investment.
