Long description
Scientific researches evidence that the amount of medications that go to waste each year in the United States is $5 billion worth. In Greece, an estimated 34.000.000 packs of medicine expire in the households and as a result are thrown away in the trash each year. Pharmaceutical substances of medicines end up in the environment polluting even our drinking water. Against this background, GIVMED is exploiting the potential of technology to help people and companies donate leftover medicines. GIVMED considers the return of unused medication an action of great value to help the medicine essentials of individuals in need but also forms a culture of caring while managing responsibly personal surplus assets. Equally, donating surplus medications provides important savings to health care systems and reduces unnecessary medication waste.
Based on innovative technology and collaboration, GIVMED accelerates its activities, which build upon four axes:
1. Development of a web-network of public and private actors for medicine donations.
2. Raising public awareness on access to medicine through communication campaigns.
3. Provision of training to socially vulnerable groups and health professionals on medicine-related issues.
4. Improvement of the legislative framework regarding the donation of medicine by citizens and companies.
