Converting waste in poultry processing into chicken feed, energy and organic fertilizer.
Long description
Our project revolves around collection of slaughter waste from our private chicken slaughter facility, organic waste from the neighboring municipal bovine slaughter house, organic waste from local hotels and restaurants as well as market waste for further recycling into chicken feed, energy and organic fertilizer re-use. Our strategy is to establish a black soldier fly farm where the above collected raw organic waste is first broken down by feeding it directly to the black soldier fly larvae. This will result in harvesting of dried protein rich larvae for re-use as chicken feed while its excrement (frass) is fed into our biogas digester for a further refining process that creates good quality and useable organic fertilizer. The biogas digester will also absorb any excess organic waste collected inclusive of the frass to produce biogas energy. The biogas will be connected to a boiler for heating water at the slaughter facility used for the scalding process hence replacing the use of LPG inside the chicken slaughter house. Furthermore, installed biogas cooker and drier for processing pre-cooked and dried pulses and grains targeted for distribution to hotels, restaurants and homesteads within the local market will cut the unsustainable use of firewood and charcoal in the community as well as saving time in food preparation. The established commercial biogas facility at the chicken slaughter house allows for the improvement of our processing capacity for more food products that have an impact in both nutrition as well as the environment.
