Ready for poultry feeding

Long description

Waste is a resource that can be managed to achieve economic, social and environmental benefits. Kenya’s capital city, Nairobi generates 3,000 tons of waste every day. Among many types of wastes, market and food waste from eateries and homes are the biggest sources of organic waste in Nairobi.

Addressing this challenge effectively in Kenya is critical to delivering on Kenya’s right to a clean and healthy environment for all, advancing the circular economy to create green jobs and wealth from the waste sector, and realisation of the nation’s sustainable development goals.

This project aims to utilize the waste in rearing maggots from Black Soldier Flies as an alternative for high protein source used in poultry feeds. The maggots will degrade this waste and eventually produce a by product in form of organic fertilizer.

The project targets to reuse about 1,000 tons of organic waste by 2025 and generate 300 jobs directly as well as impact 3000 households in Kenya. The products from this project aim to generate 5000USD per month by 2025.
