Extending the shelf life of surplus farm produces, processed into consumer semi-finished products to meet the need of low income families.

Long description

The volume of food loss and waste in Nigerian commodity markets is massive, it is roughly estimated that over 40% (approximately 2.5 million tons of food, worth $19 billion) of the harvested farm produces each year are sent to a nearby landfill. This is mainly because of poor food handling, poor storage and transport infrastructure, lack of cooling facilities and poor food packaging. This is compounded by the fact that majority smallholder farmers produce the same type of crops, harvest around the same time and target the same market. Consequently, creating over-supply and most of the produces is not sold but ending up to landfill. However, this has huge impact on the economy as it reduces farmer’s income, increase food insecurity and increase greenhouse gas emission. To prevent this negative trend, Organic FoodCycle intends to establish a market- based business model that will help to divert the surplus food away from landfill, process them into consumer-facing products in order to meet the need of low income families. We want to play a major role in expanding food life cycle before deterioration set in. This would help to redistribute surplus food to those in need with take-away price.
