A Vibrant HIFI system designed for circular economy.
Long description
In recent years, there has been a growing awareness of the need to change our industry and resource utilization practices. The project carries out design for a circular economy, where the end of one product’s life is the beginning of another.
Plasti Fantasti is a research and development venture of new and smart technologies for the use of recycled plastic. In developing the mechanisms and series of products, I followed the principles of accessibility and emphasis on product disassembly and assembly, the use of few parts, and a limited range of raw materials. The outcome is an honest, transparent, and colorful design language, coherent to the subject matter of music playback.
The end result of this effort is a HIFI system comprising of a pair of active monitors and a turntable. The enclosures are made of CNC milled recycled HDPE sheets and laser cut steel sheets, with no glue, screws or any additional connecting parts – only integral geometric locks. The control buttons on the speakers are also part of the case itself. Most of the internal electronic parts I used are salvaged. The construction method of the outer cases allows easy deconstruction should the speakers or turntable ever break. This enables a simple material separation of the case for recycling, and salvaging of the internal electronics for e-cycling.
