We aim to set up tech-enabled GIVO centers to locally aggregate, process recyclables and curb indiscriminate waste disposal in Kenya.

Long description

Kenya produces an estimated 12.5 million tonnes of solid waste annually, out of which less than 10% is collected (UNDP). This has led to the reckless disposal of municipal solid waste in uncontrolled dumpsites, causing dire environmental effects including: the blockage of sewers and drainage networks, soil contamination, choking of water bodies, and release of toxic greenhouse gases into the environment. It is estimated that 1kg of plastic waste produces about 6kg of Co2, causing over 75 million tons of CO2 emitted in Kenya annually.

GIVO, a circular economy company, aims to solve this problem by setting up GIVO centers across the country. The GIVO center, housed in a portable 40ft container, is a community based, tech-enabled, entity created to facilitate the local collection and processing of recyclables into consumer and industrial goods.

Fully powered by solar energy, the GIVO centers will leverage the use of IoT technology to automate and digitize the collection of recyclables and will create 15 direct jobs per center, collect and process 90MT of recyclables and reduce carbon emissions by 540MT annually.

A key component of this project will include advocacy and community programs aimed at influencing consumer consumption behaviour and waste disposal patterns where the centers are located. This will result in a paradigm shift, helping to curb the indiscriminate disposal of waste in the country.
