RAVEL a textile conservation collective of global makers who use textiles labelled as “waste” and transform them into living garments.

Long description

RAVEL is a textile conservation collective of global makers who actively seek out used textiles, which would otherwise be considered “waste,” and transform them into new living garments. To unwind ourselves from the need to produce more toxic materials and save our planet we must find creative, innovative and radical solutions. To stop the flow of existing resources into landfills we must almost find a use for the textiles we have already created. The open source design RAVEL 3-D Printer generates RAVEL ROPE a recycled plastic lacing technology. This 3-D printed lacing enables makers to build new garments from existing textile “waste.” Free publicly available designs empower anyone to evolve found fabrics into unique outfits in their own communities. RAVEL ROPE is designed to be reusable, and is best described as a systemized upcycling process. A T-shirt can be expanded into a dress, or “re-laced” using the RAVEL ROPE system into an entirely new garment. RAVEL ROPE enables anyone to create an infinitely customizable wardrobe without needing to purchase new clothes. RAVEL will rely on a strong open source online platform and forum. The collective will share patterns, techniques, and regional fabrication services. RAVEL events will proliferate best practices, and showcase the astonishing individualized creative outputs. There are so many incredible textiles waiting for us to find, the possibilities are infinite.
