Re-C; a recycled flat pack chair that challenges the way we produce, perceive and consume furniture.
Long description
The Re-Chair comes to be in 4 steps: Re-cycled, Re-processed, Re-painted and Re-assembled. The Re-C is a flat-pack chair produced in recycled wood, repainted and then assembled by its new owner. Through transparency, narration and user involvement, it seeks to create a new sustainable furniture production system. A circular system where discarded materials are given a new and lasting life. The sourced material has a rich background story, a story that’s conveyed to its new owner a story that forges a bond between the consumer and product. 1st step: Re-cycled. The Re-C is produced with recycled wood. This wood can come from different sources and species. The Re-C prototype is made from 4 types of wood, one of them being old floor planks from the Skt. Nicolaj Church, Copenhagen. The origins of the material is communicated to its buyer. 2nd step: Re-processed. In the 2nd step the material is given a new life. By re-processing and re-shaping, the wood takes on the simple and geometric shapes of the Re-Chair. 3rd step: Re-painted. The wood is unified through colour. Elevating the design and giving the wood a new identity. Standardizing a process involving random wood collection. 4th step: Re-assembled. The chair is flat packed, making parts replaceable, saving energy and limiting co2 emissions on transportation. Finally, the buyer assembles the chair. Involving the consumer in the making of the chair and giving them insights into how products are produced and assembled.
