Macrophotography of the material

Re-designing the concept of leather by providing a circular, safe and healthy alternative made from local algae.

Long description

We envision a world without waste where materials are designed to be healthy and circular from the start, inspired by the Cradle to Cradle design agenda.

Conventional leather heavily contributes to global warming, pollution and water consumption, raising ethical and social sustainability concerns. Re:Algae is a biobased and biodegradable vegan leather, derived from healthy ingredients. Algae are repurposed to create materials for applications in architecture, interior and product design.

Regenerative Design_ algae are rapidly renewable. With material health and circularity in mind, Re:Algae is strictly refusing toxins in the process. It can safely return to the biosphere while improving soil quality.

Local Integration_ algae as a globally grown ressource allow circular material design within local contexts. Re:Algae is situated in Europe’s North and Baltic Sea using a specific local algae species. These differ in texture, colour and thickness in dependence on the local water quality, visually captured in Re:Algae.

No Waste_ algae are incredibly rich in minerals, vitamins and trace elements. In our minimal waste process all materials used are biodegradable, ensuring safe production. After use the material becomes nutritious, healthy soil beneficial to food production.

Aiming to refine Re:Algae, minimizing and standardizing processing steps, improving material durability and validating the circularity potential of the material, we engage with 2-3 local designers as test users.
