Repurpose City uses plastic banners that real estate and politicians hang from utility poles, to transform it into useful objects..

Long description

Repurpose City is a citizen organized initiative, we use plastic banners that real estate agencies, politicians and other businesses hang from utility poles all over Mexican cities, to transform it into something better. Trying to make a more conscious use of these valuable resources.

Plastic advertising, mostly in the form of PVC banners, is a big and often overlooked issue in Mexican cities. Mexico City has an outdoor advertising law that prohibits this kind of banners from being hung in city infrastructure, with hefty fines that go up to 170,000.00 Mexican pesos, but sadly are never imposed. That is why, if you take a stroll through the city streets, you will see PVC, Polyethylene and even synthetic fabric banners, that are combined with wood sticks, metal staples and metal wire, hanging from poles in worrying numbers.

As a way to show that this kind of materials should not be used for single use reasons, Repurpose City organizes workshops and generates contents that promote this type of urban repurpose, seeking to use design as a tool to craft useful everyday objects through simple and accessible techniques that can be replicated by anyone, and that will last a lot longer than the original purpose they were intended for. Backpacks, messenger bags, pet beds, bike saddlebags and tote bags are perfect examples of objects that can be crafted with these materials, but the possibilities are endless.
