Recycling Initiative for Sustainable Enterprise will create an ecohub where single-used plastics will be converted into ecobricks.

Long description

The overarching goal of RISE (Recycling Initiative for Sustainable Enterprise) is to create a nexus between the issue of hunger and Sustainable Consumption and Production.

Objectives

  1. To implement a plastic for food exchange program that will reduce the volume of single-use plastic discarded in the environment and address hunger at the same time.
  2. To create a sustainable enterprise that will upcycle single use plastics into ecobricks and provide income to people.

Activities

  1. Current foodbank member of Rise Against Hunger Philippines will be encouraged to collect their single use plastics and exchange them for food at the foodbank.
  2. An EcoHub will be constructed that will contain a collection area for plastic waste and a brick factory.
  3. At least 10 community members will be trained to work in the brick factory.
  4. Products of the factory will be marketed to companies with housing and construction projects.

Expected Results

  1. Recycling of 20 tons of single use plastics yearly
  2. Distribution of at least 40,000 pieces of canned goods per year
  3. Annual production of 175,000 ecobricks that are composed of 100 plastic laminates, shredded and then mixed with wet cement. This mixture is poured into a brick-pressing machine that the group also invented. The finished product can be used to build various infrastructures, from houses to schools, and buildings. Ecobricks look different from ordinary building blocks and resemble lego blocks. The plastic laminates also act as an insulator that locks out the heat passing through normal
