Reuse of solid waste for glasses frames.

Long description

Acknowledging the role of unrestrained consumerism around the world in ambiental degradation, specially in products connected to the fashion industry, this project proposes an alternative clean reuse of solid residues that incorporates the design and development of a collection of sunglasses. Inspired by the fifties, sixties and seventies, that broke many paradigms and started revolutions in our society, the conceived sunglasses aims for an unissex line and a timeless design.

The material employed to fabricate the product is called “mass”, which is a blend of 50% PVC (banner, blackout curtains and textile residue) and 50% thermoplastics (air conditioning pipes and blankets for insulation, polystyrene wrappings with a low percentage of organic residue, wire covers and silicone discs) that results in a resistant and waterproof material. The friction caused by the grinder can make the solid waste reach high temperatures, which can then be transformed and molded into desired products through the use of hydraulic presses.

The manufacturing process is concerned with the lowest possible amount of energy expenditure, beginning in the gathering and receipt of industrial waste, to the final product. The most interesting aspect of this design is the possible remodelling of its own products, thus creating an efficient destination for industrial waste with the possibility of fresh new design ideas, alleviating the pressure created by the increase in consumerism and establishing harmony between humanity and the planet.
