Stand UPET resignifies waste, thoughts, words, and the world.

Long description

Stand UPET comes up with a resignification of plastic bottles transforming them into stand-up paddleboards. Therefore, we handle the bottle-boards as a tool for environmental education and scientific communication, not to mention the pivotal capacity of transmuting thoughts, words, and waste. Based in Rio, one of the most densely populated cities in Brazil, the project focuses primarily on the youth and beachgoers still reaching other social groups. From public events to open talks and seminars, the STAND UPET works side by side with conventional and informal schools, environmental agencies, NGOs, traditional and indigenous communities, universities, and social actors in general. Our mission is to inspire new creative and funny perspectives of waste when discussing the impacts on the environment, notably the marine ecosystem, through outdoor liveliness, workshops, paddling, surfing, and oceanography lectures. Brazil has historical and systemic social issues, which urges us to develop interdisciplinary and integrative approaches towards each case. Since ocean preservation starts on land, we bring agroforestry, composting, community gardens, waste management, and ocean culture to as many public spaces in the city we can.

The Stand UPET board provides access to address several topics, like systemic production, cultural consumption, ecology, marine litter, oceanography, outdoor sports, waste management, among others. The methodology of the board is easy to replicate in many territories and is very fun to participate in.
