Technology for converting CO2 into organic compounds.
Long description
The rapid growth of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere is contributing significantly to Climate Change, reducing emissions to the atmosphere is, therefore, of paramount importance.
What if instead of releasing CO2 into the atmosphere, it can be transformed in producing valuable organic substances and fuels ( fig1)?
The mission of this project is to address this topic by developing low-cost technologies CO2 capture process. The solution should allow for expanding the use of existing energy sources to produce a variety of chemicals and fuel.
During the project, fundamentally new methods will be used and adapted for the production of organic compounds from CO2 using low-temperature plasma in the presence of a catalyst. Although the combined action of catalytic surfaces and DBD for treating CO2 has widely been studied over the last two decades, this concept is considerably expanded in the present project due to the CO2 pre-treatment in a separated DBD zone (fig. 2). This allows many reactions to occur at lower temperatures and pressures with much lower energy consumption and with a high yield of the finished product. This project proposes the following scheme: the initial CO2 with water vapor of the reaction mixture are processed in the discharge zone ( fig.3). After the formation of a radicals mixture is sent to the plasma-catalyst zone. Transformation of CO2 will be , without the need of additional hydrogen production.
