The pilot looks to build a marketplace for using wastes/by-products from the coffee value chain to develop products that thereby help create economic.
Long description
11% of global greenhouse emissions from the food system could be reduced if we address food wastage. India generates 350 million tonnes of agricultural waste annually and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy estimates this waste can generate more than 18,000 MW of power annually apart from generating green fertiliser. In addition to limited awareness, while India developed several localised waste management systems, we were unable to deploy the right system of policies and market incentives to embed circular design thinking in value chains. As part of the Coffee Miners Pilot, we’re looking to build a hybrid two-way circular marketplace and materials exchange for materials currently being disposed/discarded without considering alternative use-cases for value creation using by-products from commercial production processes. While there are exciting innovations that have been identified and with India being the sixth largest producer of coffee globally, we chose coffee as a pilot to link generators of spent coffee grounds and other by-products with buyers using this to develop new products. We look to link waste generators with innovators, manufacturers and designers/ artisans who would use this in their manufacturing process to create new products. As a two-way marketplace, we look to support these product designers expand their market base. We also plan to implement a pilot to understand the feasibility and viability of such a solution in India, working with select stakeholders who generate high volumes of the material and those who use this for product manufacturing.
