TômTex, a biobased material made from seashell waste and coffee ground, aims to work as a sustainable alternative to faux and animal leather.

Long description

Over 9 million tons of wasted coffee grounds end up in landfills every year, while the food industry generates 8 million tons of seashell waste. These wastes, when appropriately repurposed, can be a viable source of chitin, the second most abundant natural biopolymer in the world, behind only cellulose, and it can also be derived from mushrooms, providing a vegan alternative source for our biobased material. We have developed a technique to create an eco-friendly and economical alternative to animal and synthetic leather from chitin and agricultural waste, which can reduce the environmental crisis.
Aside from the food waste issue, TômTex will also provide a solution for leather production’s toxic tanning process. More than 90% of the leather produced globally is chrome tanned, causing negative impacts for the environment and workers’ health safety. According to the study conducted by France Labrèche (published by PETA), exposed tannery workers tend to have a higher cancer risk “between 20% and 50% above expected”. With the new technology that allows us to use natural dye ingredients and take out the leather tanning process, we confidently provide our customers a safer working environment for their employees and release no toxins to the environment.
