Upcycling textile waste into garments and accessories to create awareness and educating about the waste issue within the fashion industry.
Long description
Textile waste has become such a problem that globally we discard 75 million tons into landfill. Veleta arises from the connection that I developed between the sail, the wind, and the water at my sailing camp when I was 10 years-old. Today, Veleta is a project that joins the narrative of the magic of sailing and design to upcycle materials such as sails, parachutes, wetsuits, parachutes, paraglider, kites, tents, industrial textile waste, and more. The garments and accessories carry with them the objective to create awareness on the fashion industry waste issues, transparency regarding the materials and the people behind each product, and demonstrating alternatives to a more conventional path. I firmly believe that education is an effective wat to achieve a change in our consumption behaviors, and at Veleta, design and storytelling are our best tools to achieve it.
I challenge myself to question every single step of the process to reduce the amount of new materials so that with each product we can move towards achieving an 100% upcycled product that complies with the quality for it to last. Through a system of repairs for costumers, we plan to reduce the carbon emission of each product to make it last longer.
Sailing towards a more circular route, requires an empowered crew so that together we can travel to a more beneficial destiny for people and the planet.
