Long description
Vermiculture is the art of raising earthworms for the purpose of attaining a sustainable supply of the worms for either composting or as a protein source for animals. In our case we have majored in using the earthworms to feed or what is mainly considered as waste turning it into organic fertilizer which is used for crop production. Worms feed on a wide variety of waste ranging from fruits and vegetables, animal waste and plant remains. Worms goes along way in reducing the biodegradable waste since they are heavy feeders and they consume double their weight of waste per day. Worms are easy raised in systems called beds where the waste is collected and worms introduced the process takes one and a half months to get through and be ready for harvesting.
Other than the earthworms we also use the black soldier fly larvae which feeds on the same waste turning it in two main products namely the organic fertilizer and animal protein source for animals. Flies are raised and their eggs harvested which in return batches into larvae. The larvae are heavy feeders also as for us to produce a tonne of larvae we need to feed them on not less than 6 tonnes of waste in a span of 14 days.
