How to close the food-waste loop with the help of pigs and make Amsterdam self-sufficient.

Long description

We can eliminate food waste and get sustainable meat in return by reintroducing pigs into our food cycle. Pigs love eating leftovers and can turn 3kg of waste into 1kg of meat. This works best with a superlocal food chain and organic agriculture. That’s why this proposal is based on a scenario where the whole of Amsterdam provides itself with food from the Waterland district thanks to a smart combination of three different farming techniques. Food waste is something you can never fully avoid. In this proposal we want to show the possibility of making animals part of the solution rather than a problem. A lot can be learned by looking at practices in the past and combining it with present knowledge to get new outcomes. The ultimate goal is to show transparency of the origin and destination of our food and the overall impact this offers.
