Reducing food waste through use of clean tech for valorization.
Long description
Food waste worldwide occurs when food is left in the field. But food is not wasted the same way in every part of the world. In high and medium-income countries, 40 percent of food waste occurs in markets and by consumers. In low-income countries, like Kenya food is rarely wasted by households; instead, 40 percent is lost during the post-harvest and processing stages, usually because of poor infrastructure and the lack of efficient storage technology. Wheeling fruits means Processing of Surplus fruits at farm gate level via mobile processing unit. Wheeling Fruits will utilize a mobile processing facility that will be fitted onto a trailer and can move between farming areas. The produce fit for processing will be bought from the farmers directly and processed into pulp, dried food or powder. The Wheeling Fruits concept is based on the premise that by reducing the volume of produce to be transported and the option of bulking due to extended shelf-life, food waste can be reduced at the farm gate level.
